I know that there are some pretty ornamental oxalis plants that exist but in my garden the oxalis plant is hated. I have talked about controlling the soursob variety of oxalis in the past but in this post I am focusing on my other arch enemy the creeping purple oxalis! It is such a horrible weed, you can control it by digging it out but because it has a mass of stems and roots under the ground it is hard to get it all. If you don’t get it all then it just re-shoots again! We have got some of … [Read more...]
August Gardening Plus What’s Going on in My Garden!
It’s so great to be writing about August gardening! I don’t really want to be wishing the year away but now that August is almost here it means that spring is just around the corner -yippee! If you are following me on Instagram you will have seen that Mother Nature gave us a spring teaser this week. It was just glorious out in the garden on Monday - it was cool but there was not a cloud in sky! On Tuesday we were brought back to winter though with a cold wind, grey skies and showers (here’s the … [Read more...]
February Gardening 2014: What’s Going on in My Garden
Oh my goodness it has been hot these last few weeks! A week or so ago we had a run of 5 days over 40 °C and the last few days have been really hot too. It has been so hot lately it has been hard to think about what February gardening jobs might need doing besides watering the plants! We reached 41 yesterday, 42 today and we have another hot day tomorrow coming up before we get a much needed cool change. We have basically been spending our days indoors because it has been just too hot to work … [Read more...]
January Gardening 2014: What’s Going on in My Garden
Now that Christmas has been and gone for another year and the New Year is upon us it’s time to turn our attention to January gardening tasks! January and February tend to be the hottest months of summer here in Victoria. So this month we will be focusing on keeping our garden as cool and well watered as we can. We have had a couple of days here and there where the temperature has been over 35 °C and some plants have struggled a bit. But it will only get hotter over the next couple of months … [Read more...]

This last month has just flown by – I can’t believe that December is almost upon us! As the end of November fast approaches we now have to start thinking about the December gardening jobs that need to be carried out. For us December usually means that the garden hoses are dusted off and the watering systems are checked. Nothing has changed this year because the amount of rain that we have had lately is slowly starting to ease up. While we have had a few showers, they are becoming less … [Read more...]

We can pretty much walk around the garden every day and find something new that is blooming or a shrub that needs some attention. As the weather is warming up everything is coming to life and it is a full time … [Read more...]
Controlling Oxalis Weeds in the Garden
I find weeding the garden can be quite therapeutic, getting down on your hands and knees amongst the plants you can forget about life’s troubles and just concentrate on pulling up those pesky weeds while you burn some calories! If you are vigilant and ensure that the weeds are removed before they can have a chance to flower and spread their seeds then most weeds will not return either! One weed that is not so easy to get rid of is my arch enemy oxalis pes-caprae, also known as soursob and … [Read more...]
Killing Garden Weeds Naturally Using Mulch
Have you ever felt like you are spending all spring weeding the garden? Until recently I seemed to be on a yearly treadmill weeding the garden in spring one year only to be back starting from scratch doing it all over again the next year! I couldn’t go on like that, especially as I have several large garden beds where I live. I decided to put down some mulch throughout the garden beds to try and suppress the weeds. I found some valuable websites that have helped me to do just that. Since … [Read more...]
