Whether we like it or not, for many of us, tying a necktie is something that we have to learn at some point in our lives. Some will learn earlier than others. For instance a child attending private school might need to learn to tie a tie at a very young age, while others might not need to learn until adulthood.
No matter how old you are, when you need to learn, tying a necktie can be a daunting task if you have never done it before. When starting out you need clear step wise instructions that show you exactly what to do to get the tie looking right. There are many different knots that can be used to fasten the tie and instructions that may seem simple and straight forward for one person may seem confusing to another. Also some people may prefer to use a more complicate knot while others just want to learn a basic knot that will still look good.
The links below include instructional videos for tying straight neckties and bow ties, as well as a couple of videos aimed at teaching children how to tie a tie. The last two links are for websites that provide everything that you need to know about ties, including tie care and most importantly lots of ways to tie a tie!
Tying a Straight Tie
The first video link is sourced from a designer label, tie retailer in Melbourne. The website of Distino of Melbourne provides an instructional video range that shows various ways to tie a tie.

Tying a Bow Tie
While tying a bow tie may be less common it is arguably more daunting that a standard straight tie. The following video takes more time explaining the process and is an excellent aid when learning to tie a bow tie.
Teaching Kids to Tie a Tie
I also came across a couple for cute videos that show fun ways that children can be helped to remember the steps when tying a tie.
The following video was found at the Sybrina Publishing website, which also provided various other resources for teaching children to tie a tie.

I learned to tie one of these in cegolle as a waitress (yes, we also had to wear penny loafers and khakis the good ole preppy days!) and have always done my hubby’s black tie. Sort of goofy in a romantic kind of way!
