I don’t know how long they have been around for but I have just discovered sweet pink onions! Perhaps I am just a bit behind everyone else but when I saw them in the supermarket a few weeks ago I was surprised to see them.
We use quite a lot of onions in our house; I regularly cook with brown onions and we also use a few red onions. These sweet pink onions were describes as being great for using in sandwiches, salads, stir fries, stews, curries, roasts, and BBQ’s. That sounded very handy to have around! They were sold by the bag so I thought that I would give them a try.
One major factor that got me interested in these onions is that you can eat them raw as well as cooked. I love having onion in a salad but the true salad onions are hard to get in the colder months. I know that you can use a red onion in a salad but often they have a very strong flavour and I prefer my salad onion a bit milder.
After trying these pink onions I was very pleased with their taste and adaptability to a variety of dishes. I have used these pink onions in salads and they are great, they have plenty of favour but they’re not too strong. I have also used them in stews and on pizza and they were wonderful with those as well.
Normally when I use a brown onion on a pizza I will soften it a little bit in the fry pan before adding it to the pizza. Mainly because it can go a bit dry in the oven. But with these pink onions I didn’t need to, I just chopped one up and added it straight to the pizza. It was a great time saver and the onion was nice and soft and didn’t go dry at all!
I am hoping that these pink onions will be available all year round so that I can use them in my spring/summer dishes as the weather warms up. They certainly have been a great addition to my kitchen so far!
Have you ever seen or used a used pink onion before? I would love to hear your thoughts.
