Making Your Own Self Raising Flour

Last updated on: April 9, 2022 By Kaylene Filed Under: DIY, How To, Kitchen Hints 20 Comments

What do you do when you haven’t got any self raising flour – you make your own! Well that’s what I had to do the other day when I had a craving for another batch of these yummy scones and I realised that I didn’t have enough self raising flour left! I had plenty of plain flour in the pantry but no self raising flour.  I was sure that I had heard of some way of turning plain flour into self raising flour! So I jumped on the computer and searched for a solution. As it turns out I didn’t have … [Read more...]

Attractive Storage When You Have Lots of Cupcake Liners

Last updated on: November 26, 2016 By Kaylene Filed Under: DIY, How To, Kitchen Hints Leave a Comment

I'll admit that I just can’t walk past the baking section at the supermarket without having a quick look at the cupcake liners that are on offer. I love these pretty little pieces of paper that make baking so much easier! I use cupcake liners when I am making cupcakes or muffins because they are not only fast to pop into the baking trays - but they also make clean up afterwards a breeze. The less cleaning the better I say! As well as being convenient cupcake liners also add that something … [Read more...]

How to Roast Garlic in the Oven

Last updated on: July 4, 2019 By Kaylene Filed Under: How To, Kitchen Hints Leave a Comment

Roast garlic is so delicious and it’s easy to do it yourself in the oven! thelinkssite.com

We use lots of garlic these days; it hasn’t always been that way though. Despite having garlic growing in our garden, until a couple of years ago, we were not harvesting and using it - gee that has changed! The last couple of years we have really become passionate about growing our garlic. Last summer we had a large harvest of garlic and we have been using it as often as possible. We use it in soups, stews, on pizzas and for garlic bread. We usually either mince it or dice it but recently I … [Read more...]

DIY Dry Roasted Peanuts

Last updated on: June 26, 2014 By Kaylene Filed Under: DIY, How To, Kitchen Hints Leave a Comment

One of my favourite snacks at the moment has to be dry roasted peanuts. I find them so satisfying when I am looking for something to nibble on while watching TV. I like to snack on unshelled roasted peanuts because shelling the nuts keeps your hands busy. Also you eat less actual nuts if you have to shell them as you go! I have to confess, used to love to snack on M&M’s and other chocolates but they just have too many calories. I find that the peanuts are a healthier alternative to sugary … [Read more...]

Learn how quick and easy it is to make brown sugar at home using only white sugar and molasses. You’ll never need to buy brown sugar again! Removing and Preventing Hard Lumps in Your Brown Sugar

Last updated on: November 16, 2013 By Kaylene Filed Under: Kitchen Hints 3 Comments

When I recently went to make My Favourite Easy Mix Christmas Cake I found that the brown sugar in my cupboard had gone very hard. I needed it in a hurry so I had to bang it on the bench a bit in order to get some out.   I wondered if there was a quick way to soften the sugar and also whether there is a better way to store the brown sugar to prevent it going lumpy and hard in the first place.   The links below show you how to soften and store brown sugar so you can avoid the … [Read more...]

Separating Bits of Broken Eggshell From a Cracked Egg

Last updated on: November 15, 2013 By Kaylene Filed Under: Kitchen Hints Leave a Comment

It’s easy to use a larger piece of eggshell to remove any smaller bits from your bowl. I learnt this trick from my mother a long time ago but wondered recently if it was widely used by others.   I found a great site that explains how to get that pesky piece of eggshell out of the cracked egg!   thekitchn website: No Stress! How to Get the Eggshell Out of a Cracked Egg                   … [Read more...]
