Salvia plants add wonderful colour to a summer garden. They require only moderate watering, they can handle extreme heat, and they flower for months. Summer in Australia tends to be very hot and dry. Where we live temperatures close to (and sometimes over) 40 °C (104 °F) are not uncommon during the summer months. This extreme heat can be hard on our garden so we try to choose plants that can tolerate these conditions. Plants that require lots of water don’t tend to last too long in our … [Read more...]
Links I Love from May
The first few months of the year have been so dry in the garden; we didn’t know when we would be able to take a break from watering! We had to wait until May (last month of autumn!) to get some decent rain. It’s so good to hear the sound of rain on the roof and know that the WHOLE garden is getting a good drink. One downside of getting good rain is that the moisture starts the weeds growing. So now I’ll have to be on my toes and check the garden beds for weeds regularly. It’s tempting to stay … [Read more...]
Links I love from March
Whether you’re into craft, baking, or gardening (or perhaps your into all three) you’ll want to check out these great links from March! For this month’s Links I Love I just had to share a photo of the marigolds in my vegetable garden! Originally I bought them to help deter bugs in the veggie garden. But now I love them because they are so pretty. Most of the vegetables are dying back because of the cold but the marigolds are still going strong! Actually I think that I planted them a bit … [Read more...]
Links I Love from September
Even though this month’s Links I Love post is looking back at September I am definitely looking forward to summer. Warmer days spent in the garden are fast approaching and with that comes some delicious home grown fruit! Our plum and apricot trees blossomed a few weeks ago but the apple trees are just bursting into flower now! I took the above photo a few days ago of our granny smith apple tree with the apricot tree in the background. I just love how the apple blossom is pink when in bud and … [Read more...]
Links I Love from August
If you’re into baking, crafting, gardening, and DIY then you’re in the right place. Scroll down to see some of the awesome and inspirational links that I found during August! Mother Nature can’t seem to make up her mind about whether it’s winter or spring at the moment. We get a couple of nice days and then we seem to bounce back to cold, wet and wintery days! Most days it looks like spring because all the trees are in blossom, but the wind is so icy cold! I don’t get much done in the garden … [Read more...]
Links I Love from June
Oh my goodness it has been cold the last couple of days! We got down to -4 °C yesterday and -2 °C this morning brrrr! The overnight temperatures during June were much milder so these frosty mornings are a bit hard to get used to. I suppose we just have to expect more of this now that we are into the middle month of winter! I love my gardening but it’s easy to spend most of your time inside when the weather is this cold. One activity that is enjoyable to do outside this weather is having a … [Read more...]
Links I Love from May
If you want to see some great recipes, craft, DIY or gardening ideas then you need to check out these awesome links that I saw during May! May was a fairly quiet month in the garden flower wise. With the cool weather most of the plants are settling in for winter. However one plant that has been flowering lately is the native emu bush (eremophila) in our garden. These plants originate in Western Australia but also seem to grow well, with little care, in south eastern Australia. We have a few … [Read more...]
Links I Love from April
It was the first really cold autumn night we have had last night! It got down to around 1 °C, so it was almost a frost! April was rather mild really considering it’s the second month of autumn. The photo that I am sharing this month is of one of our ornamental pear trees. It’s about the only tree in our yard that has given us some autumn colour so far! The others will have to get a wriggle on because we only have a month to go and we will be into winter! Today I’m having a look back at the … [Read more...]
