I could not let today pass without writing a post in support of National Pet Adoption Day. This event is one that is close to my heart, and that of my family, because we welcomed two adopted cats into our home a little over 12 months ago.
Pet ownership is not for everyone but after our experience I would urge anyone who is contemplating getting at pet to consider adopting one from one of the many animal shelters around the country. The idea of getting a new kitten or puppy from a breeder or pet store may be tempting but it is so rewarding to know that you have given a loving home to an animal that was otherwise homeless.
Our two cats, Maddy and Wally, have brought so much love and joy into our house and now we cannot imagine life without them. I often marvel at how a mature animal can form a bond with complete strangers so quickly. It is as if they know that you chose to give them a good home and they love and trust you for that.
We have had cats in our home in the past but somehow we seem to have formed a different kind of bond with Maddy and Wally.
It is strange at first taking on a pet that has a past that you don’t know about but they soon adjust to their new surroundings and then it is like they have always been there.
We adopted Maddy and Wally from our local RSPCA shelter but there are many animal shelters that have animals looking for their forever home. On this National Pet Adoption Day the organisation Pet Rescue as teamed up with Pet Stock to host adoption days around the country. Please consider visiting one of these shelters and adopting a loving pet.
As mentioned earlier pet ownership is not for everyone, but if you are going to bring a pet into your home there is nothing more rewarding than giving a home to an animal that is desperately in need of one. It is a wonderful experience that I will never forget and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a pet!
