Wow where has the year gone? Now that the days are getting longer and the weather is warming up it feels like Christmas and the end of the year are approaching fast! I can’t believe that October is behind us and it’s already time to get stuck into the November gardening jobs! While the daytime temperature here these last few weeks has definitely increased we have still had a few really cold nights. Just when we think that we have used our wood heater for the last time the overnight … [Read more...]

July Gardening Plus What’s Going on in My Garden!
Wow, where have the last six months gone? It seems like only yesterday that we were celebrating the New Year and now I am writing about my July gardening jobs! It is so hard to believe that we are almost into the middle of winter already. The best thing about July is the feeling that spring is not far away. During June the afternoons are so short because it is getting dark by 5pm. By July we are well past the shortest day and slowly but surely the days are getting longer. Another reason why I … [Read more...]
June Gardening Plus What’s Going on in My Garden!
Well June is here and the days are definitely getting shorter. I am really missing the longer days of summer! In the summer we could leave going out into the garden until 4 o’clock and still have hours of daylight to work. Now the sun goes down a little after 5 o’clock so we have to start much earlier! We might have to start scheduling our June gardening jobs for the morning so that we have more time to get everything done! It is amazing how the focus in the garden changes as we head into … [Read more...]
April Gardening 2014: What’s Going on in My Garden!
Well we have just said goodbye to March and it is now time to start thinking about the April gardening jobs that need doing. I can’t believe that April is here already – I still haven’t done some of the jobs that I planned to do in March! Despite being well into autumn we have still been having some nice weather over the last few weeks. Earlier this week we even got up into the thirties, which is quite hot for this time of year. It is starting to feel a bit more like autumn these last couple … [Read more...]
January Gardening 2014: What’s Going on in My Garden

January and February tend to be the hottest months of summer here in Victoria. So this month we will be focusing on keeping our garden as cool and well watered as we can. We have had a couple of days here and there where the temperature has been over 35 °C and some plants have struggled a bit. But it will only get hotter over the next couple of months … [Read more...]
Controlling Oxalis Weeds in the Garden
I find weeding the garden can be quite therapeutic, getting down on your hands and knees amongst the plants you can forget about life’s troubles and just concentrate on pulling up those pesky weeds while you burn some calories! If you are vigilant and ensure that the weeds are removed before they can have a chance to flower and spread their seeds then most weeds will not return either! One weed that is not so easy to get rid of is my arch enemy oxalis pes-caprae, also known as soursob and … [Read more...]
How To Use Compost To Make Your Own Potting Mix
A trip to the hardware or garden centre is not complete without picking up a couple of bags of potting mix. We go through heaps of it at my house because we have lots of plants in pots! We are often planting seeds, transplanting seedlings or simply transferring established plants to larger pots so it is not hard to use up quite a bit of potting mix. Buying all this potting mix ends up being quite expensive too. The cheaper brands don’t tend to have the quality required to produce … [Read more...]
Irises: When and How Should I Transplant Them?
My family are keen gardeners and recently we have started growing irises. The question that arose recently was When and how should I transplant my Irises? I found a couple of sites that gave quite detailed information on when and how to transplant Irises and so I have included the links bellow. There is also a quick informative YouTube video that I found which was produced by the Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) in North Carolina (US). The consensus seemed to … [Read more...]
