Easy Plastic Plant Markers

Last updated on: June 28, 2021 By Kaylene Filed Under: DIY, Gardening, Tools and Equipment Leave a Comment

Two rows of radish plants growing in the soil with a drip irrigation hose running down the middle. A plastic plant marker labelled ‘Cherry Belle Radish’ is sticking out of the soil in front of the plants.

I have enjoyed growing my own vegetables immensely over the last few years.  It is so rewarding to plan out what you want to grow, care for the plants, and then harvest your vegetables. I have even contemplated planting vegetables that I don’t like that much just so I can see if I can grow them! No matter what you are planting though, one thing that comes in handy in the vegetable garden is plant markers! If you are sowing lots of different seeds then you need to keep track of which ones … [Read more...]

Organising Garden Irrigation Supplies

Last updated on: January 30, 2016 By Kaylene Filed Under: Gardening, Tools and Equipment, Watering and Weeding Leave a Comment

Whether you have a large or a small garden having some sort of garden irrigation set up can be handy. Things like drippers and sprays permanently set up in a garden bed make watering the garden so much easier. For most of our garden beds we just have to either turn on a tap or connect a hose to one point and the entire garden bed is watered. When you have a garden irrigation system you inevitably end up with lots of spare bits and pieces. Such as different types of spray heads, spare … [Read more...]

Protecting Garden Hose Connectors

Last updated on: September 14, 2019 By Kaylene Filed Under: DIY, Gardening, Tools and Equipment Leave a Comment

We have a fairly large garden which means that we have a few taps around the garden. Many of these taps have to have multi outlet hose connectors attached to them. This allows us to send water to where it is need during the warmer months. We find that we need to have two way connectors (up to even four way connectors) on most of our garden taps so that we can connect multiple hoses and drip irrigation systems to the one tap. This way the hose connectors allow us to water more than one garden … [Read more...]

Testing Soil pH To Get The Most Out Of Your Garden

Last updated on: July 24, 2013 By Kaylene Filed Under: Gardening, Tools and Equipment 1 Comment

We all enjoy planting an array of plants in our garden so that we can have lots of colour and variety but we don’t always think about the various needs of the plants. One example is the soil pH requirement of a plant. Generally most plants do best in soils that have a pH close to neutral but there are some exceptions. This is why checking and adjusting the pH of your garden soil is one task that should be done to ensure that your garden plants are given optimum growing conditions so they can … [Read more...]

How To Use Compost To Make Your Own Potting Mix

Last updated on: July 24, 2013 By Kaylene Filed Under: Gardening, Tools and Equipment Leave a Comment

A trip to the hardware or garden centre is not complete without picking up a couple of bags of potting mix. We go through heaps of it at my house because we have lots of plants in pots! We are often planting seeds, transplanting seedlings or simply transferring established plants to larger pots so it is not hard to use up quite a bit of potting mix.   Buying all this potting mix ends up being quite expensive too. The cheaper brands don’t tend to have the quality required to produce … [Read more...]

Getting Started With Compost: Great Information And Links When Learning About How To Compost

Last updated on: June 26, 2014 By Kaylene Filed Under: Gardening, Tools and Equipment, Watering and Weeding Leave a Comment

If you are like me and love gardening then you will put out lots of mulch around your plants to combat weeds and conserve moisture and you will also go through lots of potting mix as you pot up new plants. This can prove to be quite expensive though when you have a large garden and lots of potted plants. One way that you can cut down on your reliance on purchasing these garden products is to make your own compost which can then be used directly as mulch or as an ingredient in potting … [Read more...]

Repairing a Leak in Garden Irrigation Hose

Last updated on: July 24, 2013 By Kaylene Filed Under: Gardening, Tools and Equipment, Watering and Weeding 4 Comments

I was doing some weeding in my garden recently and I accidently put a fork through a piece of my drip irrigation system. I wasn’t sure how I should fix it and found that taping it up didn’t work. I found the following videos that show how to remove the damaged section of pipe and then insert a barbed coupling piece to re-join the two pieces of pipe.   A video I found at the IrrigationRepair.com website shows what material you will need as well as how to repair a leak in your drip … [Read more...]

Have you ever had a job that needed doing in the garden that you just keep putting off? You know what I mean; those jobs that you keep saying ‘I must do/fix that one day’. Well changing the garden shed door glides was my ‘keep putting it off’ garden job! If you have a garden shed with sliding door you will probably know what I mean. The shed door glides are the small moulded plastic parts that connect the doors to the track at the top. These small pieces of plastic play a vital role in the use … [Read more...]
