When I am outside in the garden and there is no one else at home I like to have my mobile phone with me just in case someone tries to contact me. If I am wearing jeans then it is not too difficult to keep my mobile with me because it fits easily into my pocket. The problem is when I am wearing clothes that don’t have pockets and I don’t like putting my phone down just in case I forget where I put it. It’s times like these where some type of mobile phone holder would really come in handy! The … [Read more...]
Plastic Earrings from Recycled Milk Bottles
Making jewellery from recycled stuff is really popular at the moment and I can see why. These cute plastic earrings are cheap, look beautiful and no one would ever guess that they were made from old milk bottles! I have been interested in having a go at making some of my own jewellery for a few years now but it was only recently that I gave it a try. In particular I wanted to make some of my own earrings because I tend to wear earrings more than necklaces, bracelets, or rings. I like earrings … [Read more...]
Christmas Nails: Easy Stripy design
This month has just flown by so far and I haven’t been able to post here as often as I have wanted to. I have been sick, our beautiful fur baby Wally has been sick, and the weather has been so hot we have been flat out watering the garden! When you throw in planning for Christmas and attending end of year functions it has been a frantic last few weeks. One thing that I was determined to try (and share) was a cool idea for Christmas nails! I have really wanted to have a cool red and white … [Read more...]
Removing Sticky Labels and Glue Residue from Jars
You can do so much with empty glass jars and bottles; you don’t necessarily have to just put them out to the recycle. Glass jars are great for storing small items in the pantry or for storing jams, chutneys, and pickles. You can also use them for storing small craft pieces or even as a vase. The only problem with many of the jars is that the sticky labels and the label glue can be hard to remove. If you are lucky then all you will need to do is soak the jar or bottle in some warm soapy water … [Read more...]
Easy Homemade Firelighters
We have our wood heater going almost constantly over winter, it is so nice to be able to curl up on the couch on a cold winter’s day and watch the fire! It’s also great to come home to a warm house in the winter. Even when the fire has died right down it still puts out enough heat to keep the house reasonably warm. As the weather starts to warm up though we are able to let the fire go out during the day more and more often. This means that we start to use more firelighters to get the fire … [Read more...]
How to Roast Garlic in the Oven
We use lots of garlic these days; it hasn’t always been that way though. Despite having garlic growing in our garden, until a couple of years ago, we were not harvesting and using it - gee that has changed! The last couple of years we have really become passionate about growing our garlic. Last summer we had a large harvest of garlic and we have been using it as often as possible. We use it in soups, stews, on pizzas and for garlic bread. We usually either mince it or dice it but recently I … [Read more...]
DIY Dry Roasted Peanuts
One of my favourite snacks at the moment has to be dry roasted peanuts. I find them so satisfying when I am looking for something to nibble on while watching TV. I like to snack on unshelled roasted peanuts because shelling the nuts keeps your hands busy. Also you eat less actual nuts if you have to shell them as you go! I have to confess, used to love to snack on M&M’s and other chocolates but they just have too many calories. I find that the peanuts are a healthier alternative to sugary … [Read more...]
Cool Vases from Everyday Objects
I must say that when I have flowers I normally just get out a standard vase, fill it with water, and then plonk the flowers in. Making a vase doesn’t normally enter my mind! That is until now! I have discovered that there are lots of ways that you can make your own vases so that it is not just the flowers that are a focal point - but the vase is too! When my mum recently told me that she was going to arrange some flowers, using a pumpkin as a vase, I was a bit sceptical. I could not even … [Read more...]
