Cleaning the windows in a house can be a daunting task, especially if you have many large windows. You can go through quite a bit of window cleaning spray as you clean off the dirt and grime and then buff the window to make it gleam.
Often cleaning the dirt off the windows is not as hard as trying to make sure there are no streak marks left when the window dries. Sometimes you have to wet down the window with cleaner and then polish it dry a couple of times to eliminate streaks. It can be frustrating if you think that you have cleaned the windows properly and then when you stand back and view them from another angle you see the streak marks are still there!
Bathroom mirrors and shower screens can also get quite dirty, with splatter and splash marks quickly accumulating. Again you can spray them down with glass cleaner and wipe them over but it is the drying process that seems to give the most grief. Getting a gleaming streak-free look can be difficult.
The link that I am sharing today gives four recipes for glass and mirror cleaner that you can make up yourself. The recipes all use various combinations of vinegar, alcohol, corn-starch, and water which are things that most people have around the house anyway.
Crunchy Betty website: Battle of the Homemade Glass Cleaners
I used the third recipe from the above link which used ¼ cup of white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of corn-starch and 2 cups of water. The main reason I chose this recipe was because I didn’t have any rubbing alcohol.
I also didn’t have corn-starch but I did have cornflour so I used that and it worked just as well!
The Crunchy Betty website suggests that the recipe be made up in a spray bottle but I was concerned about the cornflour blocking up the spray nozzle so I just mixed it up in a small plastic container. I then used a soft cleaning cloth to apply the glass cleaner to my mirror and dried it off with paper towel.
It was very easy to use and I didn’t have any streaks left on the mirror when it was dry. I have transferred the glass cleaning solution into a screw top jar and will keep it in the cupboard until I need it again.
