Several bone shaped puff pastry snacks on a plate. A small bowl of tomato sauce can also be seen on the plate.I had this cool idea for some Halloween appetizers a few weeks back but I didn’t know how they would turn out. I thought that I could use a bone shaped cookie cutter to cut out some puff pastry bones. But I wasn’t sure what to top them with.

I did some trial runs with herbs and sesame seeds and they were nice, but they didn’t really excite me. My idea was to have some appetizers that were really easy to make but also tasty. My first attempt lacked flavour so I had another try.

A small bowl containing tomato sauce is pictured on a plate with puff pastry bone snacks around the bowl. The next time I decided to try brushing some of the puff pastry bones with honey and then sprinkling them with sesame seeds. I just had to I warm the honey up a bit so that it would be easier to spread.

I wasn’t disappointed with the flavour this time, the combination of the sweet honey and the savoury sesame seeds is delicious! It might sound a bit bland having just honey and sesame seeds on puff pastry but it is really yummy! Your mouth is filled with a delicious honey sesame flavour – it is so good!

A single puff pastry bone is pictured propped up against a plate. More pastry bones can be seen on the plate in the background. The other topping that I decided on for my puff pastry bones was some grated cheese. Again, this sounds a bit bland but the cheese that I used was a mixture of mozzarella, cheddar, and parmesan.

The toasted cheese flavour goes great with the puff pastry and I love that you can pick up the distinct flavour of the parmesan!

Halloween decorations including two small pumpkins can be seen in the background. While both of these flavours of puff pastry bones were delicious on their own I couldn’t resist including some dipping sauce. And because it’s for Halloween it had to be bright red tomato sauce!

A cheese topped puff pastry snack has been dipped into the tomato sauce and is being held up for the camera. Halloween decorations such as pumpkins and eyeballs can be seen in the background. This will go down a treat with the kids this Halloween. They won’t be able to resist tucking into a bone or two that have been dipped into some blood tomato sauce!

Description

Halloween guests won’t be able to resist tucking into one of these delicious puff pastry bones that have been dipped into some blood red tomato sauce!

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets of ready rolled puff pastry
  • 1 dessertspoon of honey (warmed slightly*)
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds
  • 1 small egg, beaten
  • 1/3 cup of grated cheese**
  • tomato sauce for dipping

Instructions

  1. Remove puff pastry sheets from the freezer and allow to thaw.
  2. Preheat oven to 220 °C (430 °F) and line a large baking tray with baking paper.
  3. Use a bone shaped cookie cutter to cut out the pastry bones, transfer bones to the baking tray leaving a small gap between them.
  4. Brush half of the bones with the warm honey and then sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  5. Brush the rest of the bones with the beaten egg and top with a small amount of grated cheese.
  6. Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Allow to cool slightly on baking tray, serve with some tomato dipping sauce.

Notes

*To warm the honey: Add a small amount of hot water to a soup mug. Place honey into a small coffee cup. Put the coffee cup into the soup mug so that the bottom of the cup is warmed by the hot water. As the honey warms up it will thin and become easier to brush over the pastry.
** I used a pizza cheese which is a mixture of mozzarella, cheddar, and parmesan.
