My Tips for Enforcing a Cat Curfew

Last updated on: July 27, 2019 By Kaylene Filed Under: Pets 14 Comments

Black and white cat sitting next to a steel garden post. The sun can be seen setting behind the trees in the background. Text overlay says: tips for getting your cat to come inside at night!

We have had our two cats, Maddy and Wally which were adopted from the RSPCA, for a little over six months. It took a while but now they have settled into a routine of coming inside just as the sun is setting. We do this because we have a cat curfew in our area that states that all cats must be kept indoors between sunset and sunrise. We struggled at first, spending time most evenings trying to coax the cats inside after dark. Wally was probably the worst because he just loves being outside … [Read more...]

A great homemade advent calendar doesn’t have to be hard to make. Here are 10 advent calendars that are quick & easy. Some can even be made from recycled everyday items! I don’t remember having advent calendars when I was little. They may have been around but I don’t think that they were as popular as they are now.  Anyway the first memory that I have of an advent calendar is seeing the commercial ones in the supermarket. You know the ones where you open the tab up each day and get a … [Read more...]

Cairns: My Favourite Places to Visit

Last updated on: September 8, 2013 By Kaylene Filed Under: Travel 2 Comments

I have been to Cairns in Far North Queensland several times over the last few years and I think that it would have to be one of the best holiday destinations in Australia. Cairns is small enough that you can soon learn your way around but it also has so much to see and do. If you come from southern Australia, like I do, then it is great to escape the cold weather and head north to the beautiful tropical Cairns climate. During my first visit to Cairns I enjoyed snorkelling on the Great Barrier … [Read more...]

Two Very Different Weeks!

Cairns - Me at Mamu Rainforest Walk

I can’t believe how much of a contrast the last two weeks have been. This time two weeks ago I was sitting back and enjoying the summer heat in Cairns in Far North Queensland. It was so nice to soak up the sunshine in the tropical heat by day and then spend the balmy evenings sipping a nice cool glass of wine or two.   In a stark contrast, when I arrived home last week I found myself struck down with a very nasty sinus infection! I have been feeling very sad and sorry for myself and … [Read more...]

Mice as Pets: What you Need to Know for Success

Last updated on: September 2, 2015 By Kaylene Filed Under: Family, Pets 1 Comment

Tips for keeping mice as pets!

When I got my first pet mice I was looking for a pet that would not require a 10 – 15 year commitment. Don’t get me wrong I love dogs and cats but at the time I was not able to commit to a decade or more of pet care. Getting pet mice was an ideal compromise because the mice were very cute and fun to play with but I knew that they only had a short live span of one to three years. I would really recommend pet mice to anyone who wants a pet but can’t make a long term commitment or even if they … [Read more...]
